Moving from Germany to the United States, one of the things I missed most was the bread. Not just any bread — real German bread. The kind with a thick, crackling crust and a dense, chewy interior that fills the whole kitchen with warmth when it comes out of the oven. American bread, as wonderful as this country is, just does not compare.
The good news? If you live in or around Seattle, you do not have to miss it anymore. The Pacific Northwest has quietly become home to some genuinely excellent German bakeries — places run by people who actually know what Brötchen are supposed to taste like.

Kaffeeklatsch Seattle — Lake City
This is the real deal. Kaffeeklatsch has been baking traditional German goods in Seattle’s Lake City neighborhood since 2011, and it shows. Family-owned, community-focused, and deeply committed to doing things the right way — including sourcing flour from local Shepherds Grain Mills.
What to order: Their Brezeln (pretzels) are made with lye water for that authentic chewy, dark-brown crust you know from Germany. The cardamom coffee cake and Blechkuchen (sheet cake) are also worth the trip. They even offer gluten-free options and a wholesale program, so you can find their goods at local farmers markets too.
📍 Lake City, Seattle
Perfect for: Brunch, Kaffeepause, picking up fresh bread for the week
Black Forest Bakery — Kent
A short drive south of Seattle, Black Forest Bakery in Kent specializes in traditional German cakes and pastries. Their Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (Black Forest cake) is the crowd favorite — and if you grew up in Germany, one bite will take you straight back.
📍 Kent, WA
Perfect for: Special occasions, birthday cakes, Kaffee und Kuchen
Deru Market — Kirkland
Technically a market, but Deru in Kirkland carries a wide range of traditional German breads, pastries, and cakes. Their pretzels follow a traditional recipe passed down through generations — you can taste the difference immediately.

Can’t Make It to a Bakery? Bake It Yourself
Sometimes the bakery is just too far, or you want the satisfaction of pulling a fresh loaf out of your own oven. A few things that make home baking much easier:
- German bread mixes from GermanShop24 — Brötchen mix, Schwarzbrot, Vollkornbrot. Just add water and bake. Tastes like home.
- BrotBox — Fresh German bread baked and shipped directly to your door anywhere in the US. We’ve reviewed it and it’s the real thing.
