German Culture in Fredericksburg, Texas

There is another German-style city in our big state of Texas. Fredericksburg is a small city in Central Texas. It is well known for having several wineries that are publicized by a wine trail map. It was settled in1870 by German immigrants and is nestled between Austin and San Antonio in the beautiful hill country setting.

Some of the German culture is reflected in the businesses such as the Old German Bakery, where you will find all sorts of German breads and rolls along with favorites of schnitzel and bratwurst. Another example of German architecture is found in the nearby town square, Marktplatz. The Vereins Kirche is a replica of a 19th-century German church that once stood in the city of Fredericksburg.

The city’s German heritage is featured at the Pioneer Museum, which contains information on settlers’ homesteads and their artifacts. This museum is a combination museum and historical site that preserves the German Immigrants and their culture and tells the story about their settlement in America. The museum includes 10 buildings, with four of them being in their original locations.
