Helen is one of the most famous Bavarian villages in the United States today. This quaint city is located in the North Georgia Mountains and was recreated in 1969 during a revitalization of the area. An artist with German roots helped to transform this mill town into what is known as “the best little German town in the South.”
Currently, there are more than one and a half million visitors who come to see this scenic downtown area. This area also features the state of Georgia’s best wines that include German-style Rieslings and Gerwurtztraminers. Helen is home to one of the best Christkindlmarkts in the U.S.
In addition to the German Christmas festivities, Oktoberfest is also a special time in Helen. It lasts from early September until late October. However, it is not only beer and pretzels that bring thousands of tourists and townspeople to celebrate these holidays. The fall foliage in Helen and the surrounding area is spectacular. There are also hot air balloon races in the spring. It is truly an unforgettable experience of German culture and customs.
