German Culture in Hermann, Missouri

German Immigrants chose this area to settle because it resembled the Rhine region in Germany, based on its setting and climate. This town is located between Kansas City and St. Louis, north of the Missouri River. And just like the Rhine, this region is well-known for its wines and vineyards.

This town includes several Bavarian-style buildings boasting timbers that are found along the main street. Deutschheim State Historic Site has preserved the heritage and culture of the German immigrants who founded this little town during the 19th century when thousands of farmers, artisans, craftsmen, brewers, and vintners migrated to Missouri, as did many intellectuals and political activists. They were famous for establishing their own school.

This area came to be known as the “Heart of German-America” where the customs, language, and traditions of Germany were resettled into the New World. Today, the German heritage has been well-preserved at Deutschheim State Historic Site. In 1978, The Hermann Brush and Palette Club, a local preservation group, donated the buildings that house this historic site in 1978. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources maintains this historic area.
