Since 1976 Gerda Bailey owner of Gerda’s German Restaurant and Bakery is cooking Authentic German food and has become known as an Icon in Omaha, Nebraska. Gerda was born in Augsburg Germany, where she met and married her husband that was in the military. In 1963 her husband was transferred to North Carolina. There she began her career as a bakery manager and learned the secret of preparing pan-fried chicken, which is known to be the “Best in Town”. In 1972 she and her family settled in Omaha, Nebraska. In Omaha, Gerda took a position at Rotella’s Bakery as a cake decorator to further her baking career. Gerda’s passion for cooking and baking inspired her to open her own Authentic German Restaurant and Bakery. Her tradition of providing Authentic German cuisine and delicious bakery treats continues today after almost four decades.
Today, Gerda spends most of her days baking and decorating wedding cakes, and preparing homemade soups, real mashed potatoes, sauces and spaetzle (German noodles) from scratch. While her bakers bake daily fresh bread and rolls, delectable cakes, decadent pastries and torte’s, delicious pies, yummy doughnuts and danish and a wide variety of cookies.
Gerda’s friendly wait staff will serve you breakfast, lunch or dinner from her extensive menu. Gerda’s menu includes a children’s menu, daily luncheon specials, including her “Best in Town” Reuben sandwich on freshly baked German pumpernickel bread.
Gerda’s dinner menu features a variety of Schnitzel dinners, appetizers and a great selection of German beers and wines that will compliment your dinner selection. Gerda’s famous “Pan Fried Chicken” dinners are served Wednesday through Friday only. All dinners include a choice of soup or salad. There is something for everyone.
Every year, Gerda’s German Restaurant celebrates Oktoberfest just like they do it in Munich, Germany. Her famous Oktoberfest is held the second week in September on a Friday and Saturday with two big tents, a German band and German music, a real family affair. This celebration features a special Oktoberfest menu that includes succulent big ham shanks, half of a roasted chicken, German Brats and Knackwurst, Sauerkraut, Spaetzle, German Pretzels, Desserts and much more. Don’t miss this “Wunderbar” once a year event.
